Satan's Laundromat

West Ham

11/30/04

West Ham, London

Thanks so much to the guest photographers last week, and especially to Miranda for being the wizard behind the curtain.

Remember how the MTA was backing down on the subway photo ban? Well, so much for that. They've now officially published the ban proposal, unchanged, which means there's a 45-day comment period. Send in your comments.

nassio/empty: Amsterdams

11/21/04

I've been lucky to be able to spend some time the past year in both New York and Amsterdam and I see them as sister cities. The buildings on the left, in Old Amsterdam, were finished in 1723. The one on the right, New Amsterdam, I'm assuming was finished some years later.

Today's guest photographer: Sely Friday of nassio/empty.

Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. The electoral map the way it shoulda been.

I've asked some of my favorite photobloggers and urban explorers to guest-post on Satan's Laundromat while I'm away. Stay tuned.

Fulton Street

11/16/04

Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

A couple weeks ago I re-walked Brooklyn's most historic street, Fulton Street, between Flatbush and Broadway Junction with Kevin. His page about that section is here. He's also documented Fulton near the East River and in Downtown Brooklyn. What a street.

Soho. Does anyone know what this is advertising?

Long Line Restaurant
Atlantic Avenue, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

Tribeca. The Port Authority security guard pictured claimed that photographing the Holland Tunnel ventilation building was illegal and that the police would take my film. The Port Authority has not yet responded to my request to provide the section of law they claim applies. Keith had a similar experience at the Lincoln Tunnel.

Breezy Point, Queens

Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Teresa has fallen on hard times.

Keith and I went out shooting on Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Avenues for his series Available (start here, keep clicking "Next"). He also let me play with some of his lenses.

Falun Dafa Is Good

11/09/04

Falun Gong protesters (seen here outside the Chinese consulate) came to town for the RNC and never left. Meanwhile, the pizzeria-surrounded-by-nothing is mentioned in this somewhat unsatisfying article about the far West Side (near the end).

Fuck the South.

Before you forget, please vote.

Did you vote today? Say so in the comments on this entry. Three people picked at random get their choice of any 8x10 from this site, for free. No fair saying you voted if you didn't. Void where prohibited.

If you prefer, apparently you can get free porn instead.
