Cop: Why are you taking a picture of a mailbox?
Me: There's no law against taking pictures in public.
Cop: I know that, but why are you taking a picture of a mailbox?
Me: It's not a mailbox. See?
Cop: (looks at sticker that says "Syringes Only! No Mail")
Cop: Why would you want a picture of that?
Me: I'm weird.
Cop: (shrugs, walks away)
Some nice stuff at memorie dal sottosuolo -- I especially like the March 24th entry, and (farther down) the unexpected pairing of March 10th and March 5th.

Thanks to everyone who made it to the walk today. Some other people have put photos up: Aaron Brown, Matt Law, Aaron Monfils, Tien Mao, Callalillie, EverythingNY.

I wanted to end the tour at something truly forgotten and unique, but it had been stolen since the last time I was in the area. Here, instead, is a July 2003 photo of it by Rudayday:

Walk #2 preview
03/26/04
The walk (details here) is on for this Saturday, March 27th. There may be some showers in the morning, but the afternoon is supposed to be glorious -- and anyway, even if it's raining in the afternoon, it'll be in the 60s, and it'll be a nice welcome to spring. Beware: The Brooklyn-bound F train is running on the A from West 4th to Jay, so if you're coming from Manhattan, either get off at High Street (and don't get lost) or allow extra time to backtrack from Jay Street to York Street. Meet at York Street station at 1pm sharp.
And on Sunday, there's a rally in opposition to Bruce Ratner's plan to abuse eminent domain to bulldoze several blocks of Prospect Heights and build entirely-out-of-proportion skyscrapers (photos of the affected areas here). It's at 2pm on Pacific Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.
Here's a quick preview of some of the sights we'll see on Saturday. Hope you can make it.

I expect a bit more sunlight, though.
Today's Times has a fantastic article about Coney Island Avenue and its ethnic diversity and bizarreness. Some photos from C.I.A.: 1, 2.

My friend Amos is riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles in June. It's a huge commitment for a good cause (the San Francisco AIDS Foundation) -- or, well, it would be for a good cause if Amos weren't so bad at raising money. He hasn't raised dime one yet, and he's going for $5000. Eek. Want to help him (and, mostly, people with HIV)? Give whatever you can afford.

Kevin Walsh, of the redoubtable Forgotten NY, secured permission for a rare tour of the colonial-era Prospect Cemetery in Jamaica on Sunday. The cemetery opened in 1640 (or 1668, variously), but time has not been kind to it.

The Times had an article about the tour, with a priceless photo (not available online) of people craning their necks to read the upside-down monument.

New York picks
03/12/04
Yesterday, I put up some of my favorite photos from the last year. Today, here are some of my favorite things about New York. I originally wrote this list as something of a to-do list for a friend who will be in New York for three months.
Walk the length of Broadway. Detour for Haitian food at Krik Krak, 844 Amsterdam Avenue at 102nd.
Walk the length of Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. Stop to eat at Sripraphai, 64-13 39th Avenue.
The walk of abrupt Brooklyn neighborhood transitions: Manhattan Avenue to Bedford Avenue to Division to Lee (Hasidic shopping street; don't go on Saturday!) to Nostrand to Flatbush. Then back up Flatbush as far as Church.
Walk the length of Fulton Street in Brooklyn, from Fulton Ferry to City Line (a neighborhood near what used to be the city line but is now just the Queens border).
Ride (or blade or walk) the circumference of Manhattan. Call 311 and thank the Mayor.
Floyd Bennett Field. Hospital ruins on Roosevelt Island. Any marginal industrial waterfront area (Sunset Park, Long Island City, Red Hook, Gowanus). The High Line. The old LIRR Rockaway line.
Flushing. Have breakfast at No. 1 People's & People Restaurant, 38-08 Prince Street. Then see the panorama of New York at the Queens Museum. And the Unisphere.
Ride the whole subway system. Get out at the ends of the lines and walk around. Get lost among the winding streets downtown.
Tenements on Henry, Madison and Monroe Streets in Chinatown. Then have dinner for $1. Visit the junk towers at 6th and Avenue B. Green-wood Cemetery. Coney Island.
My favorite block for graffiti? A tie between Huntington Street east of Smith Street in Gowanus, and Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street west of Franklin in Bed-Stuy. Don't miss the house at 4 Downing (at the foot of Quincy Street).
City Reliquary, Havemeyer and Grand, Williamsburg.
Take in the view from the F/G train platforms at Smith-9th, or the J/L platforms at Broadway Junction.
Get the world's best shwarma at Sabaa, 4th and Atlantic, Brooklyn. Then take the D train to a Yankee game.
Go anywhere, and take pictures there.
Thanks for helping make this a fun year.

One Year
03/11/04
Satan's Laundromat is one year old today. Here are some of my favorite photos.

(Brooklyn 7, Manhattan 5, Queens 4, Chicago 2, The Bronx 1, Newark 1)
It's hard to believe it's been a year. To celebrate, let's go for a walk on March 27th (raindate the 28th). Details here; I hope you can make it.
Tomorrow, some of my favorite things about New York.

Midwood 2

Midwood, Brooklyn
New Kantacky Fried Chicken and Eleven-Seven are across the street from each other and supposedly under the same ownership.
The menu is from the apparently nameless Pakistani-Indian restaurant at 1032 Coney Island Avenue (at Foster, B/Q to Newkirk). It changed the way I think about saag (spinach). It's worth the trip. From anywhere. (I can't vouch for the ghost, though.)
And as for the new concept in kosher food, I'm speechless. It's clearly a cursed storefront. (Or perhaps haunted, by the ghost of the biryani.)

Some photos from Thursday night, after the Apple Store photobloggers event.

Soho, Canal Street, and the A train
Two quality sites at Fake is the New Real: mile x mile, photographs of Chicago at one-square-mile boundaries (reminds me of the Degree Confluence Project), and a comparison of thirteen subway systems of the world, presented on the same scale.
