Tufa at Mono Lake, Mono County, CA. They're visible only because Los Angeles' thirst has lowered the level of the lake by fifty feet. (better tufa shots)

Manzanar War Relocation Center, CA. Tens of thousands of Americans of Japanese ancestry, most of them citizens, were imprisoned in these camps during World War II.

Bodie, above the timberline in eastern California, was once home to ten thousand people.

Ah, bandwidth thievery. If you want to use some of my pictures, you can -- see the Creative Commons License posted on the site -- but you have to copy them to your own server. Copying them to your own server and then apparently messing up your HTML somehow is also allowed, but not particularly encouraged.

Sukkot
10/16/03
It's Sukkot, the Jewish festival of booths, in which Jews construct temporary booths and dwell (sleep and/or take meals) in them. They're everywhere in Jewish neighborhoods like Borough Park, where some are relatively elaborate, others not-so.

Even the non-Orthodox Jews in Borough Park are apparently taking the commandment to sleep in booths quite seriously:
