That newspaper sculpture is remarkable. What's the story there? Besides the great one told by the image, I mean.

There's a person under that "sculpture"! He seems to come out at night and let people pose with him, presumably for tips.

That's a very impressively attired street artist, not a sculpture. This guy has a lot of different costumes, all equally elaborate.

The Army pig is interesting....

The Wo Fat restaurant in the 4th picture has an interesting "Hawaii Five-0" tie in.

In that show, Steve McGarrett's chief rival was Wo Fat, the chief espionage agent for Red China, who spied on American goings-on in Hawaii. McGarrett eventually got into a bloody personal battle with Wo Fat and nearly was killed. Classic stuff.

I guess the owner of that Chinese restaurant used to watch the show.

doesn't anyone ever say anything negative?

Posted by: lucia at July 20, 2005 11:46 AM

No one says anything negative cause Mike's photos is usually on the money and awesome especially if you are used to his "style".

I really can't imagine what Bubble Pearl Pink drink tastes like. Have you tasted it Mike?

Posted by: Robin at July 20, 2005 12:01 PM

Negative comments are permitted (and welcome).

The bubble tea doesn't look pink to me; it looks more caramel-colored, which is what I'd expect.

You take some really beautiful pictures. And they all seem so effortless, like you were just walking by, stopped for one second and snapped and it came out incredibly. Your pictures make me happy.

Wow, this is my favorite set of photos you've taken, that I've seen. (been watching for 1-2 years now) I love the subject matter.. Note to self: go to Hawaii. Keep up the good work, mate.

The cat picture translated:
"Whole body - 1 hour - 60 dollars"
"private rooms * couples rooms * ???"

but I can't quite make out the last bit.

Cutest ad for a massage parlor, ever.

I think the Wo Fat Restaurant was around way before Steve McGarrett. That section of Honolulu, Chinatown, is very old.

Posted by: Wild Flower at December 7, 2005 12:38 PM

Wo Fats has been around at least since 1963 as my parents used to get take out there when my Dad was stationed at Pearl Harbor .Our family left Honolulu in 1963 on the SS Lurline of the Matsonia Cruise Line.I believe 5-0 was in the late 60s....

More Wo Fat trivia...

During the "punk revival" of the mid 90's there were a lot of really rad and almost out of hand shows there. The entire building that Wo Fat resides has all sorts of really cool hidden hallways, stairs, and secret rooms. Neat stuff.
