Honolulu & O'ahu, Hawaii
Swoon (my favorite New York street artist) has a show at Deitch Projects. Opens Thursday.
I love how you have captured the 'not so pretty' side of Hawaii.
P.S. there are so many opportunities for smart-ass comments for these pics, I don't even know where to start!! Great stuff, once again!
now, that's good.
i just came back from honolulu oahu.im addicted to musubi cakes. nice flicks.
Thats funny. I like how a sign makes since to the person who wrote it but when other read it it looks really stupid. Lol
Could someone please explain to an unawares Aussie what Poi is and why it is so popular :)
As far as I can tell, poi is basically a liquid made from ground up taro. It's served like soup, but it's incredibly dense (so a bowl of it weighs way more than a bowl of water), and the taste is truly vile. (This coming from someone who likes many other preparations of taro.) Unless you grew up in Hawaii, you'll probably hate it. Stu: your reaction to poi would probably resemble most non-Aussies' reactions to Vegemite. :)
Ha! Thanks Mike, a damn fine analogy using vegemite there! Having seen the faces pulled by those not used to vegemite I now have a new respect for Poi :)
Interesting shots! I always love to see photos of Honolulu. It's like my home away from home. I go every 6 months or so, and I can't wait to get back there. Thanks for making me smile with the signs.
I love beachfront hotels - so huge and anonymous, but light and frivolous at the same time, with all those hypnotically repeated architectural details - lovely.....
Actually I've been to Hawaii 3 times in the past 12 months... and admittedly I kind of like Poi!!! Oh, I'm an Aussie as well by the way ;)
i am from hawaii (live in ny). poi is mashed up taro plant... i never liked the taste, but like any other kid growing up if you put sugar in it it tastes great!
and i have to explain that "crack seed" isn't to them what we'd laugh about now... it's dried plums and stuff... very salty/sour.
I like the sign that reads "have some pride ok" without any punctuation and with such a conversational tone. It's very humorous.
I also really like this site. I visit it everyday at work while I'm eating my lunch at my desk.
For anyone who was confused, Look Fun is a kind of Chinese noodle.
