The city of my dreams...  What would I give to see those urbanscapes with my own eyes?  As a New Yorker, what do you think of it?  Most people from NYC who've been there told me that SF was "too quiet and flaky" for them. (I'm from Paris, France.)

Dude, what are those duck things? I kinda want one...

How long did it take you to get adjusted to bay-area folk calling san fran "the city" ?

Posted by: dolapo at June 29, 2005 12:51 PM

Meidosemme: I love it.

Chris: I don't know, but they're for sale at a crap store at, I think, 17th and Mission (SW corner).

Dolapo: It's almost adorable.

"NOT MUNI." very succinct. she looks angry.

Like the shots. I did my undergrad at Sonoma State--about 50 minutes north. Pac Bell is a helluva shot downtown near the waterfront. (and for dolapo...EVERYBODY in CA, when they live in the 'burbs, calls the hub of the metro area (SF, SJ, LA, SD,...) 'the city'.) Like when we say 'the 5' instead of I-5 for the Santa Ana Freeway.

Trust me, no one calls San Jose "the city".

Posted by: Mike at June 29, 2005 07:29 PM

Awesome set. I'm amazed at how well you notice stuff. I definitely appreciate it as a native to The City.

Also, I have to agree with Mike that I've never heard anyone refer to San Jose as "the city". It's just not. However, it's possible/likely that the LA area dwellers refer to LA as "the city" rather than San Francisco. It would make sense given that SF and LA are pretty far away from one another to merit such a casual reference by a dweller of one to another (~350 miles)--- did that make any sense? Those from SoCal seem to say "SF" or "San Fran" instead.

Oh... and all the Muni/BART/Public Transit in general folks, aren't the happiest. But, they put up with a lot from the generally hateful public, so I can't really blame them.

Again, great noticing!

I have to ask: what is that guy on the "try harder" photo doing?

It's pretty bad that the "Get Away Van" will stand out so easily. How on earth is anyone to "get away" in it? *giggle*

"No Topping"
That rules.

I was born and raised in San Francisco (right now I live all the way across the bridge in Berkeley) and have never gotten over my outskirts-dwelling friends referring to it as "The City" (usually said with caps). My mom picked up the habit from her San Josean (have you really heard people even refer to San Ho as "the city"? I've never even thought of it as "a city", just "that ever-growing sprawl of business parks and strip malls where Mike sometimes finds really cool post-war architectural relics") and Fremontish friends when I was six or seven, and I learned to very quietly heave my petulant sighs and mutter "Just one more syllable, c'mon, you can say it: San Francisco."

Posted by: Jessica at July 13, 2005 01:43 AM

Isn't it two more syllables?

Anyway, I always say "San Francisco". There's no acceptable spoken abbreviation for it. "San Fran" grates.

No topping + rainbow backround = pure genius.

I was born in the Bronx and lived on Long Island in the 50's and in "the Village" in the 60's before exile to Berkeley. S.F. is still "the City".
But that's suburban-speak. NYC was "the City" too when I grew up on Long Island. Note that it is "the City" and not "The City".

Great pix, Mike... either City.

you are all silly it is called the San Francisco or the Sco. What is all this ridiculous debate on if your from the suburbs you call it the city. there are no suburbs here. there are middle class parts of town but no suburbs. the middle class part of town is 20 minutes from the financial area and the all the rough parts of town. but there are only 5 or 6 really bad parts of town and 2 out of those six are really bad compton la type shit holes. but you are all square lames who analyze calling it the city. urbanites of blackness and other inner city populations call it frisco. whine about that .
