Allston, MA
Winter of 02-03, those Santa is Real things were everywhere. I didn't see nearly so many stickers as I did stencil graffiti. You just couldn't get away from it. One of the local newspapers even ran a story on it.
So one day I was on a date with a girl I met on Craigslist--a Big Head Todd & the Monsters show--and this tiny little Hispanic lady in her mid-30's walks by. My date squealed and ran over to say hi, and when she returned, I asked who the muchacha was.
The reply? This was the lady responsible for the Santa is Real campaign. Apparently, she had a small child, and it had started as something special for this child. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And he's a 30-something Latina.
I'm loving this series-hope you stick around in Boston for a while longer. You should cruise by my house on the corner of Mass and Tremont in the South End--it's a great corner.
Love the old Giant sticker in the background!
Up until last fall, I lived a block away from those Brooklyn Pickles. Hope you've had a good time in Allston Rock City. I used to love photographing the neighborhood at night, where lots of colorful storefronts mixed with many more colorful people.
Keep an eye out for Mr. Butch around Allston. Really interesting guy who I've spoken with on and off for six years between Kenmore and Allston. (Photo of him here -- first Google match -- http://www.davidphenry.com/States/states34.htm)
