Downtown Brooklyn. Someday every storefront in downtown Brooklyn will be a Cellular Island (or its knockoff, Cellular Tropics).

There's another on Flatbush, in between Park Place and Sterling.

For a brief period we had stores ending in "mania": Travel Mania, Video Mania, and so on

I read somewhere that the City is cracking down on store signs and awnings that contain too much information about the store. City law dictates that the only information allowed on signs and awnings are the store's address and name.

Grr. They replaced my store 24 with a silly useless cell phone store. I wanted it back ...

wow... these are truly overwhelming.

I hate that Cellular Island store. You get off the train at night, and it is all strobe lights and flashing. Gives me a headache.

But, hasn't that always been the trouble with the tropics? Too damned *cellular*! There's an ointment that helps, but you need a prescription...

you could call that row of cellular islands a "cellular archipeligo".

I LIKE CELLULAR ISLAND ITS VERY NICE THE WORKERS ARE NICE AND THEY HAVE THE HOTTEST PHONES OUT AT ALL TIMES. MAYBE BECAUSE I WORK FOR THEM NAH! THATS NOT IT I JUST LIKE THE PHONES THEY GOT AND THE PRICES.

Not a bad place to shop, better than the corporate cingular, t-mobile, sprint, etc stores. Better prices and more knowledgable salespeople.

Cell Island needs to be blown out of the water....I have never encountered a more corrupt group of dealers in my entire life.....they make other indirects seem like SAINTS.....I just think they should all be hog tied and beaten with a stick.

I hope you have reevaluated any positive comments you have made on this company and its owner! What a crook!!!!

Cellphone Retailer Prosecuted for Fraud

The owner of a mobile phone retail shop chain in Brooklyn, New York has pleaded guilty to charges of theft over a US$2 million scheme to defraud his customers. Mayer Vaknin, the owner of Cellular Island, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, and identity theft. Cellular Island has eight retail stores in the city, under that brand name as well as the Cellular Tropics brand.

Vaknin's attorney, Harold Levy of Brooklyn, would only say that his client had admitted his guilt, and would make no further comment.

According to the investigation by the police, Vaknin used the personal information of customers to order extra handsets and accounts, which were then resold in his stores. In a second fraud, he would report that customers had ordered service upgrades for their T-Mobile accounts, earning him additional commissions.

Vaknin faces up to 20 years in jail when sentenced, and has already agreed to forfeit a Miami property worth about US$500,000.
