The MTA is backing down! It appears that we won, but I'm still concerned about the possibility of a partial ban.

any idea what those red metal boxes with the flags on 'em are? There's one by the b'way/lafayette F/6 train downtown entrance. I've seen them elsewhere, too. They all appeared maybe 4-6 months ago at the same time.

a_fan, usually they are newspaper drop-off points. im extremely happy about the MTA backing off on its ban.

A partial ban is too nuanced for many of those who wear a badge or an orange vest. All they'll hear is "ban" and they'll keep harrassing anyone caught underground with a camera.

Mike, this is a very nice set of miscellany today. There's a lot to like: the chair arm had to be up, for instance, and it was... Yellow/gold tones in most of the set.

The yellow exterior is a wonderful find.

Dietsch, they harass people now, without any law at all. I've been detained despite having A COPY OF THE LAW WITH ME. We're living in a police state. Or perhaps a police city.

Mike, that's why I said they'll "keep harrassing" people and why I think a partial ban is too nuanced. The day after the full ban was proposed, I saw an orange-vester tell a woman that all photography was illegal, the same message that you heard when you've been detained--a clear sign that many won't bother to learn the full facts of the ban.

At best, this partial ban provides only the illusion of security, since even a partial ban isn't, practically speaking, enforceable. There's not enough personnel to stop everyone from photographing an equipment shack or a tunnel, and I'm not convinced that photographs of switches would be all that helpful to terrorists anyway.

And I guess I should explain what I mean by "too nuanced." Cops and MTA employees alike read "photography ban" in the Post and that's all they hear, and they assume it means everything's off limits. They don't care to take the time to read more deeply into the nuances of the law since it's far simpler to just harrass anyone with a camera.

Mike, could you post a copy of the relevant law, or point me to where I can find one? I think I'd like to carry a copy as well.

Thanks.
