Returning to normal

09/03/04

New York slowly returns to normal after the convention. More subway pictures than usual; my bike is still in jail. Does anyone have a plausible explanation for the "Found/Lost/Blue bag/or stolen?" one?

In the third picture (20040903-microphones.jpg), how close were you to the microphones? Is the woman wondering what speech you're going to make? Or is it a look of love? Or is she thinking "Is that zoom lens on me?"

I think it means: "(I) found (something. A) lost blue bag. (Or was it maybe) stolen?

NYC'ers have some bad trash can aim

That's a plausible parsing of the sign. But with no contact info, how does it serve any useful purpose? Mysterious.

I think it's more of a poor planing of space-- which should read "Lost Blue Bag-- Found or Stolen?" The lack of contact info is kind of bizarre, though.

How will you get your bike back, Mike? It seemed like chaos when they were loading everyone's bikes up on that police pickup truck last Friday night. Did they tag or label them?

Mike, we can just take Judy's bike from the hall. I'll tell the police confiscated it.

I belive the logic of that sign is:
(header)
MIDDLE
(footer)

So it says "LOST BLUE BAG", and then "found?" at the top and "or stolen" at the bottom. It's also my guess that the sign was posted where the person who lost the bag (and who posted the sign) last saw their bag. My guess is they left leaning on a trackside pillar while waiting for a train.

There's no contact info because the person who lost the bag either 1) is a cynic (or a New Yorker) and expects nothing to be returned 2) is homeless and has no contact info 3) is a mute who was standing right next to the sign.

A quick question about religious republicans: don't they have to think that all pitfalls that Democrats suffer are the will of God? So Clinton's heart troubles are due. And I'd just love to ask W, if he loses, what he thinks of God's way.

What I understand from the written sign and the above posted comments is that the loser of the bag is among other things appealing, potentially, to the bag's stealer. I'm pretty surprised at this appeal - are they hoping the thief would repent and return the stolen item? Or perhaps they're appealing to someone who found the item and took it - to become a 'finder' by returning the bag, and not a 'stealer' (by keeping the bag), if they are still undecided about the matter. Maybe I'm reaching the wrong conclusions, Not Being a New Yorker.

Is there such a thing as a writ of habeas bicycletus? It's been in detention over 9 days. Let my people's bikes go!

I left for college 2 days before the RNC and was completely out of touch with it. Thank you so much for your pictures, it really made me miss NY, and wish I was there for some of the madness. Keep up the good work man, you've got something really special here.

Maybe its me, but the dog in picture #8 does not seem all that ferocious.
