Hi,

I just wanted to de-lurk and do my bit to help make sure that you know your work is very appreciated. I visit your photo blog pretty much daily and there are for more images that "wow" me than don't. Thanks for all the good work!

Is it just me that looks at these photos of abandoned buildings and thinks "Damn! That would make a great house/apartment/space to live ?"

Posted by: randombanner at August 24, 2004 09:43 AM

whenever i enter a large empty space i feel a change in pressure. as though the weight of the history of the place pressing down on me. i've only ever had that feeling recreated when looking at your photos of places like the oakland station.

i don't know how you do it - but it's way cool...

cool to see this place from the inside. the new 880 bypass freeway (that replaced the section that collapsed in the quake) takes you right by this station - you can see the decrepid platforms as you whizz by.

That is a beautiful building.

The table and chairs adds a nice homey touch.

nice stuff. heh heh, are you in SF, too?!

Great pix! I have very fond memories of this station when it was still functioning.

Once when I was kid staying in Oakland we booked a trip to ride the Coast Starlight from SF to LA. We drove to the city only to discover there was no train station there. They put us on an Amtrack bus and drove us back to Oakland to board the train at this station.
Later, when I moved away from home to go to college in SF, I took a train over the Rockies and arrived at the Oakland station with a huge duffle bag.
Thanks for bringing back the memories!

I was wondering what your experiences with the law with regards to going on abandoned property has been. Ever been caught? What sort of actions did the police take if so? If not then whats your tips for going into abandoned areas..?

Another great series this! I really love this building/station, alas there isn't much chance of me ever getting there as it is on the other side of the planet.

Your photo(b)log is an inspiration, the same sort of pictures I like to take myself. Thankfully it's not just me that is fascinated by decaying and run-down buildings and structures. Still haven't found many abandoned buildings of interest to enter in Oslo (Norway) yet, but there's plenty of good motives here too.

the plaque with souther pacific lines logo reminds me of the pyramid and eye of god on the dolar bill. guess the masons control the railroads too.

If you dig this you should go to the west oakland round house off of 7th street it's been around since 1860 and was in use py up toll dec of last year but oakland deamed it a historical land mark and now up can't touch it anymore so now it's slowly falling apart :(
