Governors Island 4

08/13/04

And, finally, a panorama of the view from Governors Island:

(Click for larger panorama, 2776x500, 176K)

If you're still wondering where the hell Governors Island is, check out this great aerial shot of New York Harbor. The tall buildings near the center are downtown Manhattan; the tall buildings to their left are Jersey City (visible in the panorama as well); the foreground is Brooklyn; the green island on the left is Governors Island.

Somehow I neglected to link to Joe's panorama of the view from the Williamsburg Savings Bank building in downtown Brooklyn. This seems like an opportune time to remedy that.

What is that octagonal structure being built in the 5th photo? And what was Governor's Island originally built for? Gorgeous shots. The skyline is glaring without the WTC.

The octagonal building is a ventilation structure for the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. It's not new.

Governors Island was naturally occurring, but was enlarged substantially by landfill from the excavation for New York's first subway.

(Little-known fact: the U.S. Board on Geographic Names allows only one island to have an apostrophe in its official name. Can anyone guess it?)

Nice Panorama, almost seamless.

PS: in GI 3, It looks like they took you inside one of the buildings. if so, my tourguide was cheezy.

The tour does not go inside any buildings.

excellent photos. I was there in the early/mid 90's for an ond AFROTC function but didn't get a chance to look around.

I get sad everytime I see a picture of New York and no longer see the twin towers. And I've never been to NYC.

I love that building in the shot above the panoramic. it's totally out of place with its Japanese structure.

I live in Brooklyn and I must say, you've been documenting the 5 boroughs very nicely. I love urban photos like these. grat stuff!

We were stationed on Governors Island in the 70s and again in the 80s. It was weird looking at the 70s high rise buildings (the higher one was 877, the smaller ones were 844 (where we lived 0 apt. 2H), 855, and 866. Building 112 was officer's quarters. I don't remember there being a parking lot behind the castle so that must have been added after we left. Also the windows inside the castle prison area were added I would guess for preservation purposes. There were not there while the Coast Guard was there in the 70s. The view from most buildings was wonderful. We boasted a view of the WTC from our bedrooms, and had bird's eye seats for the Bicentennial. I miss that place. It was THE only Coast Guard base in existence. Leave it to Uncle Sam to screw up something good.
