Governors Island
A 24-city tour of urban decay.
Thanks for posting these! I meant to get to the island when I was there, but sadly ran out of time.
Can you tell me if Fort Jay has a circular building on the water that we would have seen from the tour boat ? I took a picture and did not write down where it was. Hope you can help me. Jean
There are two roundish buildings visible from the water. One is tall and is the ventilation structure for the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. The other is short and old and is Castle Williams, a fort built in the early 1800s.
Good photos of Governors Island I lived there in 1951-52. In Fort Jay officers quarters. Went back in the Fall of 2003. Nostalgia trip for me. Was a wonderful place to be a kid. Had all the access to NYC, without all the noise, traffic, etc.

I would love to buy some of your pictures, email me if you want to sell any, they are amazing,
My family and I lived in Fort Jay quarters when I was in 4th grade. What an adventure as a child! A cannon was shot off every morning right behing our quarters. I remember my mom wasn't real happy about that. I had my first kiss in the moat of Fort Jay. His name was Buzzy Alshuler. I would love to go back someday.
I was stationed at Ft. Jay on Governors Island from 1950 - 1951 with the 1st Army headquarters. I was affiliated with the Machine Records Unit. The round building is Castle Williams which was used as a military prison while I was there. This was without doubt the most beautifull army base I was ever stationed at. I really want to go back this summer and tour the entire island, I really loved it. If anyone that was stationed in the M.R.U. durring this period reads this please contact me.
