Modern subway tunnel 2

07/28/04

More from the 1970s subway tunnel beneath Manhattan: the mammoth, graf-covered ten-level emergency exit. And at the far end, a cavernous, stair-crossed, pitch-black chamber of bare concrete, perhaps 150 feet tall, 200 feet long and 60 feet wide, waits to grow up and someday become an entrance to the Second Avenue subway.

More at LTV: The Red Tunnel, Level 10, The NorthSide, and The Larger Entrance.

Accessing prohibited sections of the subway can be hazardous or fatal. Do not attempt it.

Mike, what is the deal with the sign in the last image? It is some kinda bomb shelter related signage?

I think someone put it up just for fun -- it's in what seems to be an employee break area.

sorry for naming that info but can you tell me which one you went to and how to get in or as much as you want to give me

Excellent photos. I also checked out the ones over at LTV, greatness. I found the one of the Mardi Gras looking mask in the I think it was the office to be very odd.

mike, when i'm finally able to ride the 2nd ave subway line 30 years from now, i'll think of your pictures.

The sign is a replica of the one that was hanging outside Checkpoint Charlie at the Berlin Wall: http://www.dailysoft.com/berlinwall/photographs/index.htm

I'm sure a silly member of LTV squad posted that there for effect or some shit it was never there...

Posted by: sean at July 29, 2004 04:05 PM

It was there.

Ok whatever I'm not debating but I find it odd THAT RANDOMLY A BERLIN WALL CHECPOINT SIGN WOULD BE IN A PROVISION FOR A 2ND AVE SYSTEM! lol just kidding ita just weird...

Looks like you're finding some really interesting places! I wish the subway system here was so explorable. The construction shown in those photos seems or random, huge chunks of concrete places anywhere they will fit. If I'm ever in NY I will be knocking on your door, and Steve from Undercities as well :) If you're ever in Australia give send me an email!

These pictures are great! My favorite subway tunnels to go in (of course they are abonnded) are the old ones. Those have the coolest emergency exits. If you get any other pics try to get some of different levels on the tunnels. Like lower bergen. When I was taking the F train I was in the front and I saw the sign that said for the operators not to go to lower bergen. I saw that from the front of the train.
Anyway....Cool stuff!
