This tunnel deep beneath Manhattan was bored in the 1970s as a provision for the still-unbuilt Second Avenue subway and has only rarely been used by passenger trains. Here, in one of the deepest portions of the New York subway system, a W train, far from its assigned route, snoozes on an abandoned platform; its lights are off but its air conditioning occasionally kicks in.

hi Mike
yeah! i love this place. i've been in there a few years ago. did you check out the other floors? do you have any other pictures? is the security exit still locked with a chain? which would be very dangerous in case of emergency. did they paint over the original 'lsd3'-tag too?
many questions...
greetings
alex
awesome. that looks like a lot of fun. and not as creepy as other tunnels.
How did you get in there?
Very cool.
Please do not say how you got in. We do not need everyone and their cubicle partner trying to go "explore," getting caught and ruining it for us.
I was considering doing a whole write up that included the getting in and out part, but it's one of those things that isn't worth maybe screwing up someone else's career over amongst other things. It's a fun story though, perhaps someday... A bit more photos here: http://ltvsquad.com
PS: don't recall an lsd 3 tag - where was it, the exit?
nice shots, Mike.
I especially like the little disclaimer line... it sounds so official. ;)
to &*^%&^% Control:
yes. it was in the stairway of the closest emergency exit. when i was in there in '93 the tracks ended just after the layed-up train. in the lowest tunnel without rails there were some nice raves back then.
to those who don't know how to get in:
do not enter subway tracks. it's dangerous!
Very cool Mike! :-) If I come to NY, I would like to check these places out!
Alex; yeah, I heard about those raves and the outlaw new years party. It's just too bad stuff like that doesn't happen much, if at all, anymore...
I don't recall that tag you mention offhand, but I'll poke through what photos I have from in there. It was fun checking out all the graff in there. i was a little shocked to recognize at least 3 or 4 of the tags as being people I've known over the years.
hi Control.
if you wish i can scan my pictures from 1993/1994 and post them to you. can i send you an email? i'd like to ask you something privately. regards
Fabulous series! I only wish it had an accompanying soundtrack of subway sounds...
Excellent photos, Mike. You're images have really evolved over the past few months!
You seem to capture the true lighting in the tunnel...excellent.
alex- feel free to bombard me with email - control (at) ltvsquad.com i suspect we have a bit to chat about...
It's good you didn't say how you got in there - I'm working undercover to expose Underworld!
Well, speak of the devil - just found these on gothamist. Are these the photos you were talking about yesterday? They'll look real nice in your police records.
Hello
We are a band called Haunted Pussy, and we play histrionic fear-metal, a relatively new genre. We think it'd go well with our antics to perform in a subway tunnel. We are also looking to perform in a cemetary, but it is very hard to find good secluded cemetaries to perform in where the gate isn't too high or treacherous. Any suggestions? Please call us at 917-450-4178. (We don't have a website and yahoo! shut our email address down.)
Thanks,
Bilge Baron of Haunted Pussy
So cool! Makes me wanna sneak in there and have sex! Hehe!
Yay for the obligatory rail placement photo! The quality of your photos seems to have improved lots, keep it up! One suggestion though, level your tripod. Half the photos have me leaning 10degrees to the right. The fluros are looking very white, did you have to counter white balance them much?
Your photos are very enlightening. I'm looking for as much information on underground manhattan that you might supply me. What is the lowest abandoned level that someone could still reach ? And what is the name of this particular 'tunnel' ? -thanks, Aurorum.

HI...METAL WORLD!!!
Damn! It must of been so hard to build these tunnels....and in the early 20th century too! Even though the modern ones are a little more recent.
i was there a few months back doing some pieces. that LSD 3 tag is still there.
The Aurorum who posted above is not the real Aurorum.
The pictures are interesting and very well taken. the pictures are what got my attention.
I was looking for a picture just like this one for a school project........thank you.
