Hmm, those wouldn't be subway photographs the MTA is displaying in Grand Central, would they? The same ones whose only purpose is to aid terrorists? Nah...

We had a good turnout for the protest against the subway photography ban: about 75 people.

Thanks to Joe for organizing. More at Forgotten NY, Gothamist, Joe's NYC, Matt Law, Unrelated News, Samuel Johnson, the dart board, Netherworld, and... you?
News coverage: the Times, Daily News, Associated Press
Nice shots. It's interesting to see how other people take pictures of the same subject matter. Heh I think I'll need to work on my shooting form, I'm not supporting the lens... bad.
~xlnt series here, the subway shots are fantastic~
I like the old man/little girl/dancing dolls/avenue q one.
Funny. I have a nearly identical shot of the "Ramp NOT Wheelchair accessible" sign/ramp. That walkway is barely accessible to walkers. You feel like you're going to tumble down at ay minute.
Here's a short montage I edited together about the protest, in the style of a silent film:

hey, great turnout...I support you guys from out here in California
Good stuff, Mike! And it was a great zap; let's keep it alive, even if we win this one.
I have a post with text and some more photos on my own site: http://jameswagner.com/mt_archives/004149.html(including a link to THE DART BOARD's photos)
it felt good taking part of the protest.
Cool shots Mike.
Can't help but to wonder what the conductor was thinking when he found all those people taking pictures of him.
Chances are that he didn't know it was a protest.
YAY! I love it! I was with you in sprit. I was just harrased the other day for taking photos of a store. Can you believe it?!? A freaken store. Hopefully I won't run into problems taking pictures in the CTA. Good job on the protest though. ;-)
hey mike-
it was good to finally meet you! definitely a fun time...and i made the NYT and daily news photo even though i'm only in the background of the daily news.
Good job dammit!
WOW! You had a good turn out. I hope they decide not to go through with the ban.
Finally dropped my own photos online...

That was a hoot. We'll have to do it again some time...
Nice to see everyone having so much fun, but aside from some press coverage, how exactly does this put pressure on the MTA?
There's a week or two left within the public comment period. Why not have all those protestors pound the MTA with well-reasoned, forceful, and articulate public comments?
You can do so from the MTA Web site: http://mta.info/nyct/rules/proposed.htm
Maybe get some heavy-hitting institutions and organizations (MoMA, the Transit Museum, perhaps a Subway workers union?) to weigh in as well. Be sure to cc the press, City Council, and Mayor, and post them on your Web site.
Nice, wish I was able to attend but most places are NOT wheelchair accessible.
I was back home in The Bronx over the weekend...I came out from AZ so I wasnt aware of the new photo laws , so I got harrased by some cops when I was taking rail photos @ the simpson street train station ... it was good times ;) Nice to see New Yorkers stand up for the freedom and expression of photography ... without it where would we all be ?
I think it's awesome that people are protesting that. The ban is just a waste of time. . .Who and how is that helping the protect city. I think they should just forget about it and let people take pictures of whatever the heck they want!
;-),
WiL
p.s. great pics
I got some great Photos at the Protest, Check them out @ Expedition NYC It may be a slow load, sorry :\
Love your shots...you really get around NYC, dont ya?
Sousveillance underground: shootingback in the subway, consider submission to Tribes special issue on sousveillance. Sur-veillance is French for to watch from above; Sous-veillance means to watch from below (citizens photograph police; passengers photograph cab drivers and subway guards, etc.
