I like the fruit / barbed wire juxtaposition.

can anyone tell me any details about the GIANT white mansion in Vinegar Hill overlooking the southern part of the Navy Yard? I jog past it all the time and can never find any info on it. I saw a few shots of it in the collections of some of the people on the recent walking tour. Is it a private residence? Any other info would be great. Thanks!

It is the Navy Yard Commandant's residence, apocryphally attributed to Charles Bulfinch (who designed many of the famous buildings in Boston) but likely not actually designed by him. There's a nice photo of the front (with its balconies) in the AIA Guide to New York architecture.

I don't know what its current use is. I've heard it's a private residence, but I've also heard it's a corporate training center. It is at least well kept up, unlike the ruins of officers' quarters on the north side of Flushing Avenue near Navy Street.

I bet the metal door is for shovelling coal into the basement for the furnace. I seem to recall my old elementary school (PS 24 in Flushing) had one.
