It's Sukkot, the Jewish festival of booths, in which Jews construct temporary booths and dwell (sleep and/or take meals) in them. They're everywhere in Jewish neighborhoods like Borough Park, where some are relatively elaborate, others not-so.

Even the non-Orthodox Jews in Borough Park are apparently taking the commandment to sleep in booths quite seriously:

that pop up sukkah cracked me up, dude!
Reminded me of something one might have expected to see in The Hebrew Hammer.
Where I live there aren't any Jewish (only many Chinese, here) so I didn't know about that strange "festival". Thanks for sharing.
Very very nice also #4
sleeping in booths? excellent!
only to be outdone by a meeting in our school sukkah called "How to Be Happy" which tried to entice you with promises of "Pizza In The Hut!"
I see those walled in balconies year round in
Jewish neighborhoods here in NYC. Are you certain
it has to do with Sukkot?
Wow. That's a kinda nifty holiday, right there. Never seen it done here, though. Haven't heard about it fro mthe Jewish friends. Hmm.
Yes the Sukkahs "Booths" are for the Holiday of Succos. They are supposed to be taken down during the rest of the year when the holiday is not on so I can't answer why they are left up.
