This is what you get for your dollar at Deluxe Food Market, 79 Elizabeth Street:

Pork bun and two quarters

Eat the huuuuge, delicious pork bun -- it's bigger than it looks in the picture -- and take the quarters back to the counter and get another. There are also veggie buns, just as huge but not quite as tasty, distinguished by the red dots on top. And if you can pass up the chance to brag that you just had a delicious meal in Manhattan for a dollar, there are also 50-cent desserts. The sushi on the Mott Street side is pretty good as well, and coming from me "pretty good" is high praise for sushi. Stand at the counters, or sit at the tables, and watch old Chinese people gossip while you eat.

Hi from Beijing, Mike! Great to catch up with your laundromat. Yesterday we had a scrumptious veggie bun costing the standard price of 5 mau or about 3 cents. Yum. But I will definitely try your place when confined to NY.

For my money, nothing beats the baked pork buns at this little restaurant bakery on bowery, in Chatham Square. Wish I could remember the name... It's got a red awning, though, and it's on the west side of the street.

Mmm, caramelized onions.

Love those steamed pork buns (char siu bao). Had them all the time in Kuala Lumpur. If I'm ever in New York, I'll try them there, too! Also gotta love egg tarts! Yum!

Thanks for the recommendation! Found the place and it is fabulous. You weren't exaggerating about it, ohmigosh! I am in awe, a lot of great food. I ordered the roast pork bun and it was 60 cents, but great! A friend of mine told me about this place and I told her I'd check it out today (Sunday). I plan to go back to try other things.

Also, to yukino who mentioned the place in Chatham Square: I know that place! It is "9 Chatham Square" Restaurant (though the locals in Chinese still call it Hop Shing). Yes it has a red awning and it is on the west side of the Bowery/Chatham Square. They have the best quality buns (I've never tried their restaurant food or dim sum, but they look very good and have a good reputation as well). The roast pork bun is the most popular favorite, but I also highly recommend their steamed "combination meat bun" (Dai Bao), for those aficionados (forgot how much it is, I think it is $1.10, but it is the best in Chinatown, if you like Dai Bao); the dai bao is almost as big as the Deluxe Food Market bun, but heavier.
