You'd think a big company like Wired News (part of the Lycos empire) would ask before using someone's photographs. Instead, they apparently think it's just fine to take the photos, insert a "Courtesy of" link, and be done with it.
In this case, I don't really mind, and I'm happy to have people see the photos. But a little common courtesy, like a quick email asking permission or even letting me know they'd done this, would go a long way. Maybe the next person they do this to will sue them.
(The Wired News article is here, and my original photos are here.)
UPDATE: According to the author of the story, it was a bureaucratic mistake. Wired News has apologized. Also, listen for me (and more on the mob) on NPR's All Things Considered on Friday, June 20.
Whoa, Mike, that totally sucks how your digipix were lifted from Wired and not even credited, worse off, once it's in the wire, site after site will lift yer images to publish as their own, then voila, your personal art is made public domain because everyone else and their mother are are "appropriating" (STEALING) copies of copies yer art. Who knows, maybe your next project will be tracking where your pix land. Ah the adventures ahead. Best of luck. Louise
What is Louise? the RIAA?? She/he surely is missing out what it means to be on the side of Goodness, i.e. information sharing.
Here is a little advice Mr. Laundromat... Be Happy that your pics are stolen, used and further disseminated. Let that not dissuade you from taking further pictures... and let them be stolen, edited and appropriated by as many who wish, for that is why you post them on the web. As a gift, from your sensing brain to our sensing eyes... Please do nothing in the way of making your content 'copyrighted'.... or else you will have joined the ranks of the evil.
and I know Satan would most definitely not agree.
i'm an editor, and what wired did is cheap and unprofessional. you should get paid for the use of your photos. they are a commercial publication and are making money by publishing your photos. don't let them get away with it. if they want photos, have them pay ... or send a $400/day photographer to the event, if he/she can find it. ;-)
go on. do it. this is a bad precedent. stop it now, before it gets really bad.
What we are really talking about it how we think the world should be organized...
should it be organized by shitbag money grubbers or by beautiful geniuses....
mr. laundromat firmly rooted in the latter camp, can only keep up his good work, photographing his amazements and sharing it with the world..
and shitbags like you george and louise above, can run around stealing from people and demanding money for it? what is money george?? who does it belong to??
Mr. Laundromat... keep up your beautification of the internet... spread your message... your dues with will be taken care of....
Something just happened here. I have no clue what it was.
Yukino writes DaDa poetry.
Teknon is a shitbag that thinks he's a "beautiful genius" and is so "above it all". Go move out of your Mother's basement and get a life. Better yet, move to France or Canada with all the other sensitive geniuses and develop the utopian society you all deserve and can exclude us from.
hahahahaha....and so scumball mike takes another hit. You are a sorry example of an American Citizen Mike. What happened to you in life that has made you cynical and full of ugliness. Did Mommy give you away at birth? What are you, a traveling transient with a stolen throw-a-way camera? Here you are in the greatest country on this planet and instead of using your limited skills of web design to build up the places you choose to visit, you falsely report outrageous lies and half-truths claiming to have knowledge of the places visited.
Saddly you generate like-minded people to hop on your misinformed bandwagon to whoop and hollar as foolishly as you do. Let me offer a thought for you to ponder befor you show more ignorance on the web, here goes:
" It's better to remain quiet and thought a fool;
than open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Get facts Mike, or change your format informing readers that the trash you submit is merely a reflection of your opinion, a bad interprutation of what you see around you as you wander the path of your cynical life.
Oh yeah, check out the nearest county provided Mental Health Facility; they may be able to help you. In another country, you may not find this opportunity.
GODSPEED Mike...
