Why did no one ever tell me that there are buildings on stilts in Manhattan?

Generally good advice.

Living in California, I learned that stores ending in -eria sold the item before the "eria": thus taqueria, panaderia (bakery), etc. Imagine my surprise, then:

Inwood

(It actually means "hardware store," alas.)

actually there are quite a few. there are many buildings built on pylons downtown, where the ground is not hard enough--probably silt underneath. also, there are a bunch of high-rises along the East River that sit above the FDR. amazing (and scary) feats of engineering. :) awesome blog, btw.

The ground is rock solid up in Inwood...those buildings are on stilts because the entrance is about 100 feet above Broadway (on the side that this photo doesn't show). Don't think that they call it Inwood Marble for nothing...we're tough uptown.

I was suprised to when I was in Inwood I noticed Apartments on stilts a pritty amazing thing to see.To think that the people who above that part of the apartment are only supported by acouple of colums and steel.Same with the four bridge apartments in Washington Heights.
